Recently, I was going through Facebook and saw a very scary sight…a PANDAS Bear-crow! Shudder!!! If that’s not enough to scare the crows out of a garden, I don’t know what else would!!! Talk about PANDAS/PANS Awareness! I asked the PANDAS Mom, Kelly Parks, if she’d like to share her story of the Bear-crow on PANDAS Sucks. Here it is:
From Kelly Parks:
This is our Bear-crow at Peddler’s Villiage in Lahaska PA. We have entered him in the scarecrow competition for the past two years. Our daughter Mia had asked every year if we could enter, but the turmoil of PANDAS made it an impossible task. Last year- we finally made it happen! I’d like to say we joyfully constructed him as a family- but that is not the case. Last year my husband and I stayed up half the night making his head, while my panda sat on the couch struggling through OCD and crankiness, and my older son lay up stairs in his usual pain and distress from Lyme disease. The following day, I stuffed this guy by myself while my husband worked his second job. I got him to scarecrow check in just in time.
This year, my husband assembled our bear-crow because he knows how much it means to me. We were able to deliver him as a family and enjoy a semi-normal special day together.
Peddler’s Village is beautiful- it’s our “happy place”. Our outings have been few and far between over the last few years with two sick kids, but when we need a lift we take a nice ride out to the country to this spot.
Last year, we did not win first, second or even third place in the contest. (Fingers crossed for this year!). But you can bet that if my husband and I have a breath in our body, this Bear-crow will be standing at peddlers village every fall. And we will drag our kids with us for this family tradition that is so much more than a scarecrow contest. It really does get better. ~Kelly
The Bear-crow seems like a great way to have some fall fun AND educate the public about PANDAS/PANS. It’s such a clever idea! And it’s terrific to see Mia’s smiling face…it’s great to see the whole family smiling! Kelly has been a long-time advocate and is always quick to take a stand when it comes do PANDAS. I also asked Kelly to complete the sentence “PANDAS Sucks Because…”:
“PANDAS Sucks Because…You don’t get these years back- It’s not fair.” ~Kelly Parks

Sarah Jane Alleman is a PANDAS Mom to her awesome son, Jesse. She spends much of her time on Facebook, making to-do lists, and listening to music, especially Depeche Mode. She drinks a lot of coffee, likes a good red wine, and has been known to hide chocolate in her pantry. Sarah really thinks PANDAS Sucks (the autoimmune disorder, NOT the bears!). PANDAS Sucks exists to tell the collective story about PANDAS/PANS. Sarah wants to empower other PANDAS Parents and let them know they’re not alone.
